ADSS Enhances Memory Cafes with Support and Connection – Information Events

At our Memory Cafes, we are always looking for ways to provide the best support and engagement for those living with dementia and their carers. After gathering feedback from our attendees, our Dementia Wellbeing Team decided to pilot Information Events as a dedicated space for sharing vital resources and advice.

They asked our Memory Cafe attendees whether they would prefer guest speakers offering information at each session or larger, dedicated events held three times a year. The overwhelming response favoured the latter. This approach allows service users to receive in-depth information in a structured setting while still enjoying the social and interactive elements of the Memory Cafés throughout the year.

As a Dementia Wellbeing Team, this decision made sense. Our service users already have access to one-on-one support through their Dementia Coordinators as needed. Additionally, other organizations such as KMPT and ADSS provide information drop-ins, which help to avoid duplication of efforts. By hosting these focused events, we ensure valuable resources reach those who need them most, while also making it worthwhile for external organizations to participate.

Here is what our Wellbeing Coordinator, Tracey had to say about the events:

“Both information events were very well attended, receiving excellent feedback from both carers and stallholders. We’ve learned some valuable lessons for future events, but overall, they were a great success. We believe that knowledge is power, and providing this information to both carers and people living with dementia will help them live well and with confidence.”

This what a few of the stall holders had to say about the events:

“A valuable event to share information & gain contacts from other service providers, please include us again.” –  Imago

“Excellent networking opportunity – very worth attending” – Driving Miss Daisy

“Good opportunity for visitors to find out what services are available. Nice & relaxed”

These Information Events are a collaborative effort between the Dementia Wellbeing Team, local organizations, and outside specialists who bring expertise and guidance. By working together, we create a space where carers can receive practical information, while people living with dementia continue to enjoy a more engaging and enjoyable experience at the Memory Cafes.

Since implementing these changes, feedback has been incredibly positive. Attendees appreciate the balance of structured information events and interactive activities throughout the year. We have observed that people living with dementia tend to find traditional information talks challenging, often losing interest. However, carers find them useful. By tailoring our approach, we ensure that both groups receive the support they need in the most effective way.

We look forward to continuing these events and enhancing the experience for all involved, ensuring that our Memory Cafes remain a place of support, joy, and connection.
